It was another big weekend of competition at Willow Valley with our annual Invitation Day taking place on Saturday followed by our penultimate Major of the year on Sunday, The Stableford Trophy. Invitation Day was as well supported as ever by our members and their guests who thoroughly enjoyed their day. The competition itself was very close until the team of Barry Adamson and Roger Tolson came in with a fantastic total of 45 points in the pairs stableford format to convincingly take first place. The pair were rewarded with Motocaddy golf bags for their efforts. P Jagger and L Sapwell were the runners up 4 points behind on 41 points and were happy to take home a pair of Under Armour shirts. Third place went to Aftab Ahmed and D Wilson just a point further back on 40. Onto The Stableford Trophy on Sunday 12th and more fantastic scoring. Individual stableford was the format and the lowest handicapper in the field ended up on top at the end of the day. After a glorious few months of sunshine, our members at Willow Valley had to deal with heavy rain while competing this weekend! Medal 8 was the competition on Saturday and we still had some very solid scoring considering the conditions. George Parkinson won Division 1 with a nett 69. Junior member, Habib Khan missed out by a single shot finishing with a nett 70. In Division 2, Phil Narey returned a score of nett 71 to win convincingly. Ryan Lee-Haigh finished a distant second with a nett 74. Sunday brought the really testing conditions with steady rain all day. At least it was back to stableford format to make things slightly easier for the competitors. In Division 1, Richard Thornton scored 34 points which was good enough to take 1st place by 2 points from Scott Smith who returned 32 points. Medal 4 took place on Saturday 26th May with some fantastic scores returned. Division 1 had several of these good rounds, none more so than Ahsan Khan who scored 73(6) for a nett 67. Colin Buzzard was the unlucky runner up with an also excellent score of 76(8) for nett 68. Division 2 was also settled by a single shot with Jon Clerehugh scoring 91(20) for a nett 71. Karl Larkin was the runner up with 89(17) for 72. Sunday brought a change in format with a fun Blue Tee Texas Scramble. It is one of the only times in the season that the members get to play off the professional tees on The Championship Course. The team of Karl Larkin, Alan Hudson, Scott Levick and Rick Price won on the day with a score of 59.9. The second placed team of Dan Waddington, Jeremy Bakes, Shaun Helliwell and Pete Day were just 0.7 behind on 60.6. On Sunday we also hosted a major junior qualifying tournament on our Fountain Ridge course. We have had a fantastic weekend of competition golf at Willow Valley in the sunshine. Both competitions were very well supported by the members who are glad the long winter is behind them! Division 1 of the Saturday Stableford was won by Shaun Helliwell. His return of 38 points was 2 clear of the runner up, Janet Tedstone. In Division 2, Richard Stocks scored a fantastic 43 points to convincingly take first place. Ryan Lee-Haigh was the runner up with an also impressive 40 Points. Sunday brought the May Stableford. Both divisions were incredibly close with up and coming junior member Habib Khan managing to win Division 1 with a steady 36 points. George Branch was the unlucky runner up on 35. Division 2 was even closer, with a 3 way tie on 37 points. A scorecard playoff decided that Chris Hill was the winner and Mark Halstead runner up. ‘Real’ golf returned to Willow Valley over the weekend with our first qualifying competitions of the year. Preferred lies had previously been in play since October so it was always going to be a challenge for the participants. Our Saturday Stableford was convincingly won by Linda Burnley in Division 1. Linda scored 42 points meaning the nearest challenger was Richard Irons who returned 37 Points as the runner up. In Division 2, Ryan Lee-Haigh won his first competition with a score of 37 points. George Edmondson was the runner up on 35 Points. Sunday brought our first major of the year, The Williams Trophy. The turnout was fantastic and it seems the beautiful weather really added to the day. Dean Barker was the winner on the day with a solid return of 40 Points. Matt Owen was extremely unlucky to be pushed into second place via countback. In a busy weekend of competition at Willow Valley, the long awaited summer season finally felt like it had finally arrived! On Saturday we hosted our weekly Stableford competition. In Division 1, Ahsan Khan took the victory with 38 points. George Branch was the runner up with a score of 36 points. In Division 2, Darren Bakes returned an excellent 39 points to narrowly knock Danny Shuttleworth into the runner up spot with a total of 38 points. On Sunday, the members played their first Strokeplay competition of the year in the May Medal. Zia Khan won Division 1 with a nett 72, edging Jeremy Bakes into second with a nett 73.
