10th Hole - Long Haul
In 1930 miners crawled well over two miles to safety
after being trapped in a local pit. |

Hole – Inspiration
Stood on the 2nd tee, the
spire of St John’s Church, Clifton gives a good line for your drive. |
11th Hole - Better Bed
One of the coal seams which run under Willow Valley was
given the name Better Bed. |

3rd Hole - Coal Road
The coal from local mines was transported along a road
that ran near to the 3rd tee. |
12th Hole
- Doles Lane
Doles Lane is the lane that runs behind the 12th
green and it was also the name of a local pit. |

4th Hole
- Luddite Way
In the early 19th century the Luddites
passed close to the 4th hole on their way to attack a local
mill. |
13th Hole - Unlucky Agnes
From 1300 the name of Agnes Tyngle appears regularly in
local court records for illegal brewing. |

5th Hole - Mile Post
The distance at which Derek Ibbotson, a member of
Willow Valley Golf, once held the World Record. |
14th Hole – Daniel’s Dare
In the early 18th century Daniel Defoe,
author of Robinson Crusoe, travelled extensively in this area. |

6th Hole
– Blakelaw
Blakelaw was a local hamlet that
disappeared when the M62 Motorway was built in the late 60’s. |
15th Hole - Armytage Corner
The Armytage Arms Inn, named after a local land owning
family, is close to the 15th green. |

7th Hole -
Dragon’s Leg
A local legend has a dragon inhabiting a wood just
outside the hamlet of Blakelaw. |
16th Hole -
Robin’s Arrow
Aim straight like the arrow of local legend Robin Hood,
to land safely on the 16th green. |

8th Hole -
Vicar’s Way
The 8th fairway leads towards Hartshead
where Patrick Bronte was vicar in the early 19th century. |
17th Hole -
High Moor
The golf course covers an area known as High Moor.
Highmoor Lane runs along the 17th fairway. |

9th Hole -
Almost Halfway
The course is situated close to the M62 motorway,
"almost halfway" between Liverpool and Hull. |
18th Hole -
Safely Home
Safely home to the Clubhouse officially opened by
the late Sir Donald Thompson, local M.P. in 1995. |
